Someone told me today that as part of their fitness regime, they drink a couple of litres of ice cold water each day as it lowers your body temperature so you expend calories in warming yourself back up again. Has anyone heard of this before?
Sorry, this should probably have been put in diet forum

yeah I have actually heard of that and it sort of makes sense. But I have also found out that if I make sure to drink a big glass of water before every meal I end up eating less because I am full faster.

Ice cold beverages do burn calories while the body is trying to warm up, but I don't think it's in any real significant amount

I heard the opposite, I heard that ice water allows you to put on weight because of the reaction it has on the cells, it kinda prevent them from being as active as they should :D

Yes, I have heard that supermodels drink ice cold water to help their slimming regime! I drink water whenever I feel hungry, and a lot of the time it actually stops me wanting food!

Sometime ago, I was taking a diet pill where I was instructed to drink two cups of water before lunch, I followed the instructions keenly, I didn't lose weight, in fact I think I gained a few pounds. I have never rtied the ice water bit though.

I have never heard of the ice cold water but I have heard that if you drink a big glass of water before eating you will fill up faster. Water for some reason tends to make me nauseous though.

I've heard that it helps and that it does burn calories and just drinking water in general helps you lose weight. So yeah I would say it would be a sufficent amount of calories would be lost by drinking ice cold water.

Being well hydrated will help avoid problems associated with dieting for weight loss, like the formation of stones in the gall bladder or kidneys, but is doesn't seem that drinking ice cold water would cause the body to burn enough extra calories to use as a dieting aid.

Has anyone seen a study supporting the theory behind drinking ice water?

I haven't tried it myself, but I have thought about it. I have a sinus related problem that drinking iced water on a regular basis would compound.

Ouch. It hardly seems worth your time, and the torture, for you to experiment!

I think drinking Green Tea works on a fluid displacement level too. With the fluid in the stomach you don't feel hungry, so perhaps that aspect of drinking water would work, as opposed to drinking the ice cold water.

Yeah, I will take others word for it for the time being. I do much drinking throughout the day and I do feel less hungry as a result.

I have never heard of that, now I do like to drink ice cold water right after my workouts as they cool me down quicker. That is something I will need to find out more about.

Your body has to burn calories (or fat) in order to heat the ice cold water back up to your body temperature. Water is really essential for our body, as it helps to remove dirt from our body, iI think that drinking plenty of cold water may help you to loss your weight.

For anyone trying to lose weight, this question is a most interesting! If you just want to know if your body burns calories warming the water, the answer is yes.The logic as the body requires more energy to heat the cold water that you drink up to normal body temperature when it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Yes, you can lose weight by drinking cold water. Here's an idea of how it works. You are glasses of ice water (0 ° C) every day and your body heats up to body temperature when absorbed into the bloodstream and then excreted in the urine (at 37 ° C). Your body is basically makes the heating process, which requires energy, of course, with the result that the calories burned.
